Joining us in September
We are very excited to meet you all in September and get started on your post 16 journey. So here are some things that you may want to know:
What shall I bring with me? The first day back in September will be mainly devoted to ensuring that you are enrolled on the right courses for you. However, you need to be prepared to start your courses so use the summer to make sure you have the right equipment to make a good start to your sixth form life. You are going to need stationery, a lever arch folder for each of your subjects with dividers and lined paper to make notes on. You may also need specific equipment such as a calculator or art materials for some of your subjects. If you have questions about what you may need for a specific subject then ask on your transition google classroom.
What do I wear in the sixth form? We have no strict uniform. Wear clothes that are comfortable and you can work in. Feel free to express yourself but clothes should be appropriate (no short shorts, low cut tops etc) and free of offensive slogans/images.
Am I free to leave the site? You will be given a lanyard which will enable you to leave the site freely during breaktimes and lunchtimes. During your timetabled hours you are expected to be on site at all times. You do have the freedom to study in many different parts of the school when you are not timetabled and this includes the use of the school multi-gym. Later in the school year you may be allocated flexible study which will entitle you to leave the site during some of your study periods.
Can I do what I want during the day? Remember when you were in Year 7 and you looked up to/were slightly nervous around the sixth formers? To you they ran the school; they were to be respected and were the best people to ask for help. Well, now it’s your turn to take that role. You are a role model. Enjoy it but don’t abuse it (No, sixth formers are NOT allowed to use the lifts unless they have a lift pass). Get involved in the Big Sisters programme, apply to be part of the president’s leadership team, become a subject officer. The opportunities are there.
Universities and employers are increasingly looking for students to prove that they have academic interests and experiences beyond their specific qualifications. The enrichment programme is designed to enhance your studies as well as offer opportunities that could link directly to your career and higher education choices. There is a range of options, including formal qualifications (such as A-level Core Maths or a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language), activities based around careers and personal development (such as Young Enterprise, paired reading, classroom support, or Science technicians), and free Open University short-courses (ranging from Business Management to Astronomy, and Criminology to Medicine). Some students also organise their own enrichment, based around their interests or career aspirations; for example, students have previously taken courses in Japanese, learned to play the piano, and worked at a care home.

Post 16 study involves getting used to new ways of working and this in turn means learning new skills and changing your study habits. You will be taught a variety of study skills as part of the PSHE programme in year 12.
Much more of the work you complete post 16 is done independently, which means you must be motivated but also means you need to use your time effectively. You will have already been set work through the transition google classrooms for your subjects which may involve reading texts or watching videos.
One method that we and most universities recommend to help you with note taking is called ‘Cornell notetaking’. This simple method produces concise (short) but detailed notes. Watch the videos and have a go at making Cornell notes from some of the work you have been set.
16-19 Bursary Fund
The purpose of the 16 – 19 Bursary Fund is to fund students between 16 and 19 years of age who are the most financially disadvantaged, and those who most need help with the costs of staying in education.
The bursary is available to support students in defined vulnerable groups, who may receive yearly bursaries of up to £1200 and/or discretionary payments to help those who are also in financial hardship.

NSG uses a weekly timetable of six 50 minute lessons. The vast majority of year 12 and 13 lessons are timetabled as ‘doubles’ and you will get three double lessons per subject on your timetable. (6 for public services BTEC) Additional to this you will also be timetabled for one double study session for each of your subjects and these will be timetabled in either the sixth form library or the study centre.
