NSG Art Gallery

We are incredibly proud of our students and the impressive and varied artwork they create throughout their time with us at Northampton School for Girls; therefore, we are delighted to be able to showcase some of this work with you, virtually, in our 'NSG Art Gallery'.

We know that art influences society by changing opinions, instilling values and translating experiences across space and time and we recognise that it is vitally important that our students partake in experiences that enrich their cultural capital. For many years, researchers have been interested in exploring the relationship between art and the human brain. For example, in 2013, researchers from Newcastle University found that viewing contemporary visual art had positive effects on the personal lives of nursing home-bound elders.  Research has also shown that art affects the fundamental sense of self and increases self-confidence and self-awareness and that there is a demonstrable, positive correlation between student outcomes in numeracy and literacy and their involvement in art and art-based subjects.

Encouraging our students to discuss their thoughts and ideas about art and to develop their understanding of its historical context and other cultures is fundamental to our art provision. We are keen to ensure that this philosophy of talking about art begins from the moment that our students join us in Year 7 and continues at every possible opportunity whilst they are with us, and beyond their time with us.
