Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Flourishes at NSG

Pushing Limits and Making Progress

At Northampton School for Girls, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award continues to inspire and challenge students across all year groups. This term, over 120 students are participating in the Bronze, Silver and Gold programmes; all three levels are running concurrently until July.

Students are currently taking part in their practice expeditions, with preparations well underway for their assessed journeys later this term. Recently, our Silver Award participants ventured into the beautiful yet demanding landscape of the Peak District. Led by Mr Campbell and Mrs Tarlton, students navigated difficult terrain, worked in teams and demonstrated exceptional resilience over the course of their expedition.

The school community came together earlier this term to celebrate the achievements of last year’s cohort at the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Evening, held on 1st April 2025. Families, staff and students gathered to reflect on the personal growth and dedication the award demands.

One of the most memorable moments of the evening came from student Isla Berry, who delivered a heartfelt speech about completing the Bronze Award while managing hypermobility and a diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Isla spoke openly about the pain she endured and the strength she discovered in herself. Her story moved the audience and reminded everyone of the determination and character the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award fosters.

The evening also featured a special video message from NSG alumna Eliza Humphrey, a Gold Award holder, who shared her reflections on completing the highest level of the programme. Eliza spoke about the extraordinary effort required to reach the Gold standard; she also described the honour of visiting the palace and the deep sense of accomplishment that came with it. Her message was a powerful reminder of the lasting impact the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award can have well beyond school.

As the summer progresses, we look forward to sharing more updates on the progress of our students. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award continues to be a cornerstone of life at NSG—encouraging independence, resilience and a lifelong sense of achievement.
